Among major types of invertebrates identified
are included
the ANNELIDA:
Oligochaeta {worm} (Naididae, Tubificidae,
Lumbriculidae) and Hirudinea {leech};
the ARTHROPODA:
Crustacea (Amphipoda, Isopoda, Decapoda {crayfish})
and Insecta [Ephemeroptera {mayfly}, Odonata {dragonfly}, Plecoptera {stonefly}, Hemiptera, Megaloptera, Trichoptera
{caddisfly}, Coleoptera {beetle}, Diptera (Chironomidae {midge}, Ceratopogonidae, Simuliidae {black fly}, misc.
other families)]; and
the MOLLUSCA:
Gastropoda {snail} and Pelecypoda {clam}.
Identification of macroinvertebrates of this sort are routinely utilized in USEPA Rapid
Biological Protocol analysis, water quality assessment, environmental assessment, environmental impact statement,
various bioassesment procedures for streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, and general surface water quality assessment.
Prior to creating and operating FBS, Michael Winnell, owner of FBS, was a Senior Research Associate with the Great
Lakes Research Division at The University of Michigan holding this position from 1973 to 1986. During this time,
all phases benthic invertebrate research were addressed including planning, implementaion, data analysis, interpretation,
report writing, and journal publication as well as invertebrate
taxonomy of the benthos.
FBS is dedicated to macroinvertebrate
taxonomy maintaining and updating
a library of literature totaling 367 taxonomic references supported by numerous ecological references.
Many of these jobs require the construction
of reference collections and data
bases.
